GLORIA CALLAHAN
Gloria
has shown her vibrant colored pencil paintings both Nationally and
Internationally as well as in and around the state of Virginia in juried
exhibitions. Having won awards for her colored pencil paintings in many
of these shows. Her work has been published in the 2010 book “Best of
Worldwide Artists - Charcoal, Pastel & Pencil Vol. I”. Her painting
“English Garden Foxglove” was
selected for the 2009 Scribbletalk.com’s Annual Calendar, by the online
membership. Gloria has taught a workshop for the Art Educators of PA,
and students in the Richmond VA area. She enjoys speaking to various
art groups about her favorite medium, colored pencil and it’s place in a
fine art.
She
is a member of the National Colored Pencil Society (CPSA) & it’s
local chapter DC209, the American Professional Artists League and
locally as a member of the Bon Air Artists Association, where she is the
Treasurer. Gloria is also an artist in residence at the Crossroads Art
Center where her paintings are on exhibit and may be purchased.
Like
many artists her love of art started in childhood. She has an
Associates degree in Accounting from John Tyler Community College.
Working in accounting for more than 20 years and raising a family
occupied her life. Although she creatively worked with fiber, ceramics
and landscaping at home she dreamed of making art. As Gloria’s 3 sons
grew, she finally was able to pursue decorative painting classes. This
led to over 9 years of decorative, mural and faux painting in her free
time.
Wanting
to make a career change, in midlife she taught herself watercolor
skills in order to become a contract colorist for a major art print
company. For eight years Gloria worked for a local art publishing
company doing hand colored antique reproduction engravings. All the
while she strived to educate herself in drawing techniques with an
emphasis on botanical and portrait art in her free time. This led to a
discovery of colored pencil as a media in 2005. Falling in love with
the control, detail, and realism that can be achieved with this medium.
This is where she finds the most joy and is at ease with the process of
making art.
Gloria’s
colored pencil paintings have been said to resemble oil, acrylic and
watercolor paintings. Striving for a painterly appearance, Gloria’s
techniques of layering the pencils and their translucent brilliant
results make hers a Fine Art indeed.
She
has attended workshops from many internationally known colored pencil
artists such as: 2009, Cecile Baird, CPSA; 2009 Pat Averil CPSA; 2008
John Smolko, CPSA; 2008 Carlynne Hershberger, CPSA; 2007 Robert
Guthrie, CPSA; 2006 Ann Kulberg; 2006 Linda Lucas Hardy, CPSA; 2006
